Retirement Communities

Military retirement communities are one of the benefits offered to retired military officers and federal employee with a GS-7 ranking or higher and their family members.

These military communities offer the same amenities as other retirement communities.


These communities are usually located near a military base, so that the retirees can take advantage of the commissary, the base exchange, and space available flights.

They are also situated in close proximity to a VA hospital.


The biggest lure for military retirees is the ability to share common life experiences that only other veterans can understand and appreciate.

Members of a military community can enjoy attending organization meetings that start with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer, celebrating military holidays, and flying the American flag at their home.

Some of the military retirement communities located in the United States are:


  • Paradise Valley Estates located in Fairfield, California. Near Travis Air Force Base. Located 40 minutes from San Francisco and Sacramento.
  • Air Force Village West located in Riverside, California. This is a resort community for all branches of the service.


  • Air Force Enlisted Village located in Shalimar, Florida. This community consists of subsidized housing for surviving widows of military personnel.



  • Air Force Villages I and II are located in San Antonio, Texas, near Lackland Air Force Base. San Antonio is also home to Randolph Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston, and Brooke Army Medical Center. According to their website - "This is military retirement with a modern lifestyle."
  • Army Residence Community located in San Antonio, Texas. Their website advertises them as an active retirement community.


  • The Fairfax located in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Located 20 minutes from Washington, DC. Resort like community that offers apartments and cottages.
  • Falcon's Landing located in Potomac Falls, Virginia. Less than an hour from Washington, DC, this retirement community offers luxury amenities. There are individual homes, duplex patio homes, and apartments for the retirees to choose from.
  • Patriots Colony located in Williamsburg, Virginia. An active adult community and Lifecare community. There are villas, apartments and individual homes for the residents.


  • Knollwood Military Retirement Residence located in Washington, DC. This was the first military retirement facility in the United States. It was established in 1962. This community is not limited by one's financial resources.


  • Patriot's Landing located in Dupont-Punget Sound area. Their website states that they are the only military retirement community in the Pacific Northwest.


There are many retired veterans who are not interested in or do not qualify to live in one of the military communities.

However, they do want to live near a military base to take advantage of the commissary and base exchange. They also want to be near a VA hospital.

Plus, they are often interested in attending college classes, low cost housing, low state taxes, and finding a job.

These wants have helped to make certain cities in the United States very desirable to veterans.
