  • Alpine has an amazing art scene that continues to grow. There are many art galleries downtown and each year the town sponsors “Alpine Gallery Night” the weekend before Thanksgiving for its citizens and visitors.

  • There is a local drama group called the “Big Bend Players” and Sul Ross University has an outdoor Theater where the citizens of Alpine can enjoy a variety of musicals, comedies, and dramas all year.
  • Each year in February the “Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering” is held on the campus of Sul Ross University. It is the oldest event of its kind. The event exists to promote and preserve cowboy poetry. There is also cowboy music and story telling that takes place during the event.
  • If you are a serious star gazer, then you will enjoy the pristine night skies in Alpine Texas.
  • Due to the mild climate, there is year-round golfing, horseback riding, mountain climbing, hunting, and camping.
  • There is one university located in Alpine - Sul Ross University. The University allows the community easy access to its library and recreation department.
  • There is a small municipal airport located in Alpine, Texas, and the Amtrak train makes daily stops there.

  • Big Bend Regional hospital is a state of the art medical center that caters to the wellness and social needs of it's seniors.
  • Just west of Alpine is Big Bend National Park. Big Bend is one of the most unique national parks in the United States. If you enjoy hiking, water rafting, horseback riding, and camping, then you will enjoy living near the Big Bend Park.
  • If you enjoy hot air balloon events, then you will look forward to the Big Bend Balloon Bash, which is held every year during the Labor Day weekend.

Major Drawback To Living In Alpine Texas

Nothing is perfect in this world and Alpine is no exception to this rule.

One of the major drawbacks to living in Alpine, Texas, is the isolation. It is over two hours from any large cities. Even the nearest WalMart is over 100 miles away.

But, if you enjoy the majestic beauty of this part of Texas, are looking for a slower pace of life, less crime, and want to get away from it all, then Alpine might just be the retirement city for you.
